Growing in an environmentally conscious and sustainable way The way in which we grow and operate our bulbs and tubers is continually evolving and becoming more environmentally conscious and sustainable. Think of the use of biological pesticides and minimizing energy consumption. Our greenhouses are equipped with energy screens that block out the sun during the day and retain the heat in the greenhouse at night. We also use LED lighting throughout the company. We are currently working on the next step: installing solar panels.
Healthy soil We are always working on developing good soil life; healthy roots make the plant more vital and stronger, and can thus prevent crops from falling ill. The use of crop protection has been greatly reduced over the years and we continue to innovate to keep it as low as possible. We regularly carry out trials with biological agents and, where possible, we apply these against pests, diseases and weeds. We do not use tap water. When there is a shortage of rainwater, we use the water pump to pump up groundwater. If this is still not enough, we use ditch water.
On the Way to Planet Proof Our dahlia nursery is the only nursery in the world with "On the Way to Planet Proof" quality mark. This is an independent quality mark for more sustainable products. You can find more information here: Planetproof
Sustainable, market-oriented and social enterprise Growers in the Netherlands have to comply with a growing number of government regulations in which respect for people and nature is paramount. We ourselves are constantly taking steps to make cultivation more sustainable. In this way, we can continue to make consumers happy with our beautiful products in the future. This is something we do every day! Through study clubs, we share knowledge with other growers and exchange information on how we score on energy, fertilisers and crop protection. In doing so, we challenge each other to do even better.
Extend the flowering season for bees and butterflies Sustainability is of paramount importance to our farms. Sustainable cultivation does not only mean cultivating in an environmentally friendly way, but also doing business with consideration for society and the employees. Our flower bulbs and tubers do not cause any problems for butterflies, bees and other insects and, on the contrary, extend the flowering season (nectar). In early spring with daffodils and tulips and long into the autumn with flowering dahlias and seedflowers.
